The present church was built to house a growing congregation from Amington
and Glascote.
The architect was George Edmund Street, famous for his design of the Royal
Courts of Justice in London.
The cost of rebuilding was borne in the main by
Mr. Charles H. W. Repington whose family had lived in Amington Hall for
hundreds of years.
The church replaced the 1836 Chapel of Ease on the Green which had originally
been built to serve as a village school.
When the chapel was demolished to make way for the present building the
east window was placed in the new church over the west doorway. The rich
colours are most striking, especially in the light with its central motif,
the Lamb of God.
The present east window was designed by Sir Edward Burne-Jones and is hauntingly
beautiful, if that can be said of its representation of the crucifixion.
Below it are scenes from the nativity and the whole window is enhanced by
inlaid marble panelling beneath. |
